Bring in the search engine that goes Bing
Posted by kyle on June 11th, 2009 filed in MiscMicrosoft have launched a new search engine.. BING.. www.bing.com
Looks similar to www.live.com – until you hover over the dot to the right of each result.. then the next level of the search appears.. (in fact Live now takes you to Bing.. so Live is dead – which is a kinda weird thing to say – Live is dead, long live Live)
I am not convinced by a long shot that this is a Google killer.. but it seems better than live so far.. and besides .. saying “I can Bing that” sounds much better than “I can Live that” – mind you, my wife did comment today that the first thing she thought of was Chandler from the TV show “Friends”!

Bing has caused heaps of sysadmins HEAPS of problems with people using that dratted hover-preview to bypass security in corporate environments.
Links to things like video’s on youtube.com etc that would normally be blocked by a corporate firewall are getting through because BING caches the video locally so it plays from BING.COM and not YOUTUBE.COM
I think that Microsoft didn’t think this whole thing through because they just breached about every single security tool that blocks by domain/ip range.
Oh well. Maybe next time?

I use both Bing and Google search engine and i dont see much difference in their search results. I use google for searching hard to find academic topics and Bing for general search.
